Capturing Christmas (Memories Through Photography)

With Christmas right around the corner, I have been reflecting on the past years and the many memories I’ve captured with my camera. Photographs have always been powerful tools for preserving moments and reminiscing. As I look back at these memories, I am filled with the scent of pine. I remember cutting down our Christmas tree at the same place every year. My sisters and I would spend Christmas Eve with my mother and then head to our father's in our pajamas on Christmas Day. We'd make Vitello tonnato with my dad and eat lots of tiramisu. There would be some stress, but mostly laughter. There was a ritual to it all.

It was during my sophomore year at MassArt that I really began to photograph my family. Throughout this winter of 2017, I always carried my camera around with me, mostly shooting 120mm film. Being able to look back at the images I made reminds me of these days filled with love. And with so much changing over the years: my mother and older sister moving out of state, a pandemic, and trying to fit everything into our busy, adult schedules, holidays don’t often get celebrated on the exact day. But the feelings remain the same. In the chaos, we try to keep some of the traditions intact. In recent years, I have taken fewer pictures of my family, but looking back on these images here motivates me to begin again. Maybe next year you'll see some Christmas 2022 pictures!

The holidays are filled with so many memories, and I would love to hear yours! Please feel free to share in the comments!
