5 Networking Tips for Your Next Art Event
Networking can indeed be one of the most challenging aspects of pursuing a career as an artist. Despite our desire to concentrate solely on our craft and have our work organically discovered, appreciated, and supported, the reality is that such occurrences are rare. Establishing connections and fostering relationships with others in the field is crucial for artistic development, even though it may feel intimidating for some. To navigate networking events successfully, here are some key suggestions that I recommend implementing.
1) Set your intention
Think about what you want your achieve. Are you looking for new clients? Do you want your work in a gallery? Are you looking for collaborators or mentors? Understanding your goals and the specific direction in which you aim to progress is essential for your growth journey. Identifying both what you aspire to achieve and the strategies you will employ are key factors in determining your pathway to development.
2) Be specific about what you do
You’re not just a freelancer! Go further into the details and be more specific about what you do, providing clear and precise information. Emphasize particular aspects to enhance understanding and provide a deeper insight into the subject. Think about what drives you to create. For example - “I am a professional photographer with a passion for freezing in time those precious and intimate moments that often go unnoticed in our day-to-day lives.”
3) Bring a wing-person
Going alone to events can be scary! Bring a friend or partner who can offer you that extra sense of assurance and encouragement. It's always wonderful to have someone by your side to help you feel more relaxed and self-assured during a networking event. You can also point out interesting people to each other. It is always a comforting feeling to have a familiar face you can rely on during those moments of feeling overwhelmed or when you simply need a quick escape from a lengthy and tedious conversation.
4) Project confidence
This can be easier said than done sometimes, especially if you’re an introvert. Remember we are all here to get better! Work on confidently and assertively introducing yourself, emphasizing your strengths and accomplishments without hesitation. Stand tall and speak with unwavering pride, showcasing all that makes you unique and worthy. Let your introduction reflect the confidence and self-assurance that define you as an individual. Don’t be afraid to spark conversation. Embrace the opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas openly.
5) Share a business card and follow up
Come ready with business cards or a way to reconnect with each other after the event! Following up after meeting someone will not only strengthen your relationship with them but also enable you to maintain regular communication, fostering a lasting connection.
